Welcome to the Shawsheen Elementary School’s Guidance Home Page!

The Guidance Counselor works with all students to help them develop academically, socially, and personally. The counselor's role is threefold: counselor, coordinator, and consultant.

Counselor: classroom guidance lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling

Coordinator: scheduling meetings with teachers, parents, and students

Consultant: outside agencies, parenting skills, Special Education and 504 team member

What’s happening in Guidance?

 Instructional Support Team (IST)

If your child is having academic issues/concerns, there is a formal process called the Instructional Support Team (IST) in our building. The IST consists of the referring teacher, Guidance Counselor and any other support staff who meet to discuss the student’s issues/concerns and develop a plan of action to help meet the student’s needs.   The goal of the IST is to ensure that the student have the opportunity to receive as much support in the general education program as is possible to provide.

Lunch Bunch-Social Skills Group

This 6 week grade-level enrichment activity provides the opportunity for our children to gain positive social skills.  Group discussion may center around:

• Feelings related to school
• Friendship skills
• Conflict resolution
• How to deal with “bullies”
