Come join this long tradition of excellence. The meets are indoors but the practices are conducted outside, except for the shot put and the high jump. Winter track is not only for the die hard runner but is also an excellent way for non-track athletes to get quality off season training. The team participates in 8 regular league meets as well as several major meets held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Running events include the hurdles and a variety of distances ranging from 55 meters to 2 miles. There is also a 4x400 relay that is frequently the deciding event of the meet. Several Junior Varsity meets are also held so that there is something for individuals of all ability levels. There are no cuts on the Track Team and practices are Monday through Friday immediately after school. Girls Winter Track consists of 10 events that include dashes, hurdles, races from 300 meters to 2 miles, a relay, shot put and high jump. Girls may compete in multiple events and total points earned determines the winner. We practice Monday through Friday 2:30 until 4. Some events are practiced inside and others are outside depending on the weather.
Wrestling – Varsity & JV- Head Coach Michael Pimental – michael.pimental@wilmington.k12.ma.us The wrestling season consists of 15 regular season matches and four post season/championship tournaments. The post season begins with the sectional tournament and continues to the New England Championships the first weekend in March. Each tournament is a qualifying event, requiring a wrestler to place in their respected weight class before moving on. Practices occur three times a week lasting 2.5 hours and competitions twice a week - usually Wednesdays and Saturdays. Wrestling is one of the unique sports in which everyone makes the team and it is designed to permit any person of any size and weight to compete. There are 14 different weight classes allowing everyone an opportunity to make Varsity based on their own individual weight and size. The fourteen Varsity weight classes are 103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215 and 285. Each wrestler will have the opportunity to compete for a Varsity position weekly. Wrestlers who don’t win a varsity spot will compete at the JV level that week. Wrestling is a sport where success is determined not by the size of the individual, but the size of their heart!
SPRING SPORTS The season begins on the third Monday in March and ends in late May (June for State Tournament)
Baseball – Varsity, JV & Freshman – Head Coach Aldo Caira – aldocaira@yahoo.com wilmingtonwildcatsbaseball@yahoo.com The Wilmington High School Baseball Program consists of three teams; Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshmen. All student/athletes in good academic standing that are willing to make a 6 and sometimes 7 day a week commitment to the program through the end of the school year are welcome and encouraged to tryout. Our Varsity and Junior Varsity teams can support a maximum of 15 players each, while the Freshman team can carry up to a maximum of 20. Those amounts would fluctuate depending on the number of athletes trying out for the program. Unfortunately, our program does not allow us to keep every student/athlete that tries out for a team, so at times we have to make cuts. Once the season starts the
Varsity and Junior Varsity teams play 3 times per week; our season is 20 games
long. Both teams’ season culminate with the Dick Scanlon Memorial Tournament
which is played on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. All Varsity
teams that achieve a .500 or better record get the opportunity to extend their
season by being invited to play in the MIAA post season tournament. The Freshmen
team generally plays 2 or 3 games per week and their schedule is 15 games long.
Practices are held each day between 2:30 and 5:30 on non game days. Players are
required to attend all practices to be eligible to play during the season. The
Varsity plays their games at the Dick Scanlon Memorial Field located behind
Wilmington High School. The Junior Varsity’s home field is located at the North
Intermediate School and the Freshmen play their home games at the Middle School.
Lacrosse (Boys) V & JV – Head Coach – Kieran Kavanaugh - Kavanaugh.Kieran@gmail.com Our schedule includes 18 games against CAL Tier II teams and other local private schools. Each game consists of four periods of 12 minutes each and lasts about one and a half hours. Lacrosse is a fast paced, physical and extremely entertaining game, so come see us at the Woburn Street Field where you can see the “fastest game on two feet”. To be a successful member of the Wilmington High School Boy’s Lacrosse program, each player must have a team first attitude and willingness to independently improve his individual skills.
Lacrosse (Girls) V & JV – Head Coach Maura Kee – mkee24@gmail.com The Girls Lacrosse team has been a Varsity sport for four years and has had a steady progression of wins each year. Games are played at the Shawsheen School and are 50 minutes in length, with two-25 minutes halves. Girls lacrosse is different from the boys in that there are 12 players on the field and only stick checking is permitted in the game. Athletes need to become skillful at cradling and passing on the run due to the shallow depth of the stick pocket. The game is a fun, fast paced and physically demanding sport that requires stamina, speed, and hand eye coordination. Like the boy’s game, Girl’s lacrosse is known as “the fastest game on two feet!” To become a successful WHS girl’s lacrosse player, team members must dedicate 2-2 ½ hours towards practice each day working on conditioning, passing, and stick work. Physical conditioning, dedication, and a strong work ethic are essential; players often run three to five miles in a single game.
Softball – Varsity, JV & Freshman – Head Coach Audrey Cabral-Pini – audrey8856@aol.com The Girls Softball Program is comprised of the Varsity, JV and Freshman teams. The Varsity team has a twenty game schedule lined up for this Spring. Sixteen of those games are against Cape Ann League rivals. Four are against Merrimack Valley Conference Teams. Spring Track (Boy) Head Coach - Michael Kinney – Michael.Kinney@wilmington.k12.ma.us Spring Track (Girls) Head Coach – Brienne Karow – bjkarow@gmail.com Girls Spring Track consists of 17 events ranging from sprints of 100 meters through the 2 mile. There are 2 hurdle events, 2 relays and 7 field events with various jumps and throws. There are enough events that most girls can find one that they are comfortable with. Girls can compete in up to 4 events in a meet. The season end s with League and State competitions for those that have excelled. Practices are generally every day after school.
Boys Spring track is for individuals with a competitive spirit and the
willingness to strive for a personal best. Come join Wilmington’s great
tradition of outstanding track and field athletes. There are 17 events including
7 field and 10 running events. The field events include the shot put, discus,
javelin, high jump, long jump, triple jump, and pole vault. Running events
feature 2 hurdle races, 2 relays, and 6 others ranging in distance from 100
meters to 2 miles. Several Junior Varsity meets are also held so that there is
something for individuals of all ability levels. There are no cuts on the track
team and practices are Monday through Friday, immediately after school.
Tennis (Girls) – Head Coach Kevin Welch – kevin.welch@wilmington.k12.ma.us The Girls V/JV Tennis team competes in sixteen to twenty matches during the spring sports season. Each match consists of five two out of three set matches (three singles matches and two doubles matches) each team match will have seven girls competing at the varsity level. JV matches are played after the varsity matches as player numbers and time allows. Practices are held Monday through Friday on non-match days. Practices generally last one to two hours and are held at the Boutwell courts.
Tennis (Boys) - Head Coach Robert Mailey – Robertmailey@comcast.net The Boys Varsity/JV Tennis Team practices everyday after school for 2 hours unless there is a match. The season includes between 14-16 matches with 2-3 scheduled per week. There are 7 varsity positions available; 3 singles spots and 4 doubles spots. The line-up is determined by a combination of the previous years performance, coaches observation, and a series of official “challenge matches” against teammates. Team members not making the varsity line-up will participate in Junior Varsity matches at the conclusion of most varsity matches. There is not a separate JV team. Players of all skill and knowledge levels are welcome. The Cape Ann League is consistently strong in Tennis so come motivated and ready for a challenge.
