WPS Evacuation Plan

Please take some time to review the Evacuation Plan brochure. It is our hope that we never experience a situation which requires the evacuation of students from any of Wilmington’s public schools. However, we do want to be prepared to take such action if warranted.

Representatives of the school department along with the fire and police departments have met over the past year to develop the brochure at the request of Superintendent of Schools, Joanne Benton. In addition to developing this parent brochure the group has developed procedures for staff in the case of such an event. The brochure and evacuation planning details have been reviewed by fire and police department personnel, school principals, and parent representatives.

You’ll note that the brochure includes information about how parents can help, and locations in the community where students may be moved if evacuation is required.

Please keep this brochure and take some time to discuss it with your child(ren). Each school’s principal and teacher will review their school’s evacuation plan with students and staff.

In order to insure our preparedness, we will conduct practice evacuations later this school year in some of Wilmington’s schools. You will be notified in advance if your child’s school is scheduled to participate in the practice exercise.

If you have questions concerning school evacuation planning, please contact Assistant Superintendent Peter McGinn at:  peter.mcginn@wilmington.k12.ma.us or by telephone at 978.694.6000.
